Scion is a New Zealand crown research institute (CRI) that specialises in research, science and other biomaterial sectors. At their headquarters in Rotorua there is a nursery in which several details about plants are collected on paper forms. These paper forms are passed along and are entered into an electronic format. As it is now with those paper forms, there are no systems in place to prevent entry errors (like incorrect/[the wrong] data format) and illegibility. This project is to digitize this form into an android application suitable for a device such as a tablet. The benefits of a smart device contribute to improving the overall quality of the form. The added functionalities of a camera, GPS and a touch screen make it possible for extra information to be recorded and attached, the automatic capturing of certain data, and the ability to present collected information in such a way so that data can readily be handled and processed by scion. In terms of development - I have a little bit of experience in android development under my belt. But that skillset needs to grow in order for me to implement everything that I need to. To do so, I’ve begun watching tutorials online which teach how to program for android. I will be using eclipse working in java to create the application, either testing it on an actual android tablet or on an emulator. Plan of action wise, it would've been ideal to have gone down to Rotorua to see how they do things at the nursery but the trip wasn't feasible at the time so I’ve been working to implement some of the things I mentioned before from what they've specified.
